Do you want to learn how to use geo information in a domain such as ICT, urban renewal or economy? Do you want to be able to carry out an individual research project in the domain of spatial information at a host institute? Are you ready to become an independent researcher in the GI Fields?

How to prepare Geo data to be used for geographic analysis and visualization?
The Geo Information Minor allows students to develop their skills in Geographic Information Science and focuses on learning by doing. The students are challenged to become independent researchers as they design and carry out various research assignments supervised by experts in the GI field.

The Geo Information Minor was created by five universities (VU, UU, WUR, TUD, UT) and is currently being offered by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Utrecht University. During the minor you will meet teachers from both universities.

The use of geo information has seen a huge rise in a growing number of domains. Economy (geomarketing), archaeology, water management, ICT, policy, health care, spatial planning and urban renewal are just a few examples.

In the first two months of the minor you will learn more about different spatial data sources, processing and analysis techniques and visualization methods. For this you will be trained to work with specialized GIS software as well as introduced to work with the scripting language python.

After this period you will follow a two month intership at a societal host (company or government) where you will help the host answer geographic questions using spatial data and technology.

Our partner list is constantly changing and growing. In the past, students were able to carry out internships at:

– Erfgoed Leiden en Omstreken –  Brabant Water –    Rijkswaterstaat – Deltares – ESRI NL – Gemeente Den Haag – Gemeente Utrecht – Gemeente Rotterdam –  Geodan BV – Kadaster – Kieskompass – Waterrecreatie Nederland – Netherlands Forensic Institute – Climate Adaptation Services –  Waag Society – Waterschap Limburg – VanderSat – Vereniging Deltametropool – Ministry I&M –  Port of Rotterdam

among many others…

Furthermore, you can choose two specialisations at two universities after the internships.
