Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI)
Are you a geophysicist who wants to contribute to an innovative, multi-disciplinary research project? And do you want to do this for the independent Dutch authority organization on weather, climate and seismology? Then make this vacancy your new job and apply immediately.
What will you be doing?
In this research project, it is proposed to measure tropospheric jet stream winds using pressure signals detected by ground-based arrays of extremely sensitive barometers (i.e., micro-barometers). Such knowledge could be of use in further understanding the role of the jet stream in climate change and extreme weather, which is relevant for Early Warning Centre (EWC) goals.
This position will concentrate on:
- development of methods to extract jet stream wind parameters from mesoscale pressure fluctuations measured on ground-based microbarometer arrays using state-of-the-art instrumentation and high-resolution beamforming techniques
- development of an interferometric method to extract jet stream wind speed parameters from cross-correlations of atmospheric Lamb-waves detected on station pairs
- building of a jet stream database by application of both methods on global microbarometer array networks
- cross-validation: microbarometer-derived jet stream data products will be compared to innovative wind-measurements that include radiosonde, aircraft-based and satellite-based observation systems as well as numerical weather prediction models.
This is what energizes you
You are a true pioneer who enjoys taking on a challenge and solving problems that you encounter. You work well with scientists from all over the world, both inside and outside your department. You enjoy bringing together knowledge from various scientific fields and bringing innovation to the world through creative means. You have a practical attitude.
If you need more information, we invite you to call or have a digital cup of coffee with Läslo Evers, telephone 030-2206335.
Functie-eisen
MSc or PhD in (geo)physics, meteorology, or Earth Sciences
the applicant is expected to have the necessary programming skills (e.g., Python, parallel computing) to systematically and efficiently process large quantities of microbarometer array data from global networks
You are an independent researcher, preferably with a proven track record of peer-reviewed papers. The applicant is expected to pro-actively engage with researchers from various research communities within and outside KNMI and be a pioneer in this field. You are able to think outside the box. You know how to convince people and represent the interests of the KNMI.
