INTERNSHIP GOAL
Predicting the Impact of Drought on Food Security in East Africa to Support Humanitarian Response
RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking an intern to join our team and contribute to our ongoing project on predicting the impact of drought on food
security in East Africa to support humanitarian response. In this internship, you will work closely with our team of experts to
analyze open source data, soil moisture and vegetation indices, and develop models to predict the potential impact of
drought on food security in the region. The aim of this project is to provide early warning and support for humanitarian
response to the potential impact of drought on food security in the region.
Specifically, you will : (i) Collect and analyze open source data together with soil moisture and vegetation indices in East
Africa, (ii) Develop models to predict the impact of drought on food security in the region, (iii) Work closely with our team of
experts to refine and validate the models, (iv) Communicate findings and recommendations to the team and other
stakeholders, (v) Support the humanitarian response efforts by providing early warning of potential food insecurity due to
drought.
PROFILE
We are looking for somebody who has:
● Familiarity with open source geo-data and GIS tools
● Proficient in python programming, potentially also in R and JavaScript (Google Earth Engine)
● Experience with Machine learning in python
● Strong analytical skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills
● Available for at least 4 months (up to 6 months preferred)
● Ability to work independently and among diverse team members
● Passion for social and environmental impact!
